Healthy Alternatives That Create an Equally Delicious Party!
A long day in the sun of eating greasy burgers and fried food is fun and delicious, but it always leaves me feeling super full and sick to my stomach. I’ve covered all of the 4th of July essentials with healthy alternatives that will leave you feeling fueled and full all day!
I am a firm believer that every successful party covers the 4 bases:
Party Guests! – You’re on your own for this last one but I will help you cover the other three bases!
SNACKS: A long day in the sun playing games and then drinking into the night is going to call for a lot of snacks. Chips are classic, but don’t fill you up or provide any energy.
Instead, make a tasty guacamole! Avocados are packed with healthy fats and provide 20 vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. It’s both delicious and healthy!
Another healthy idea is a colorful fruit or veggie platter. Stick with shades of red, white and blue to create a patriotic themed snack. Check out this recipe here!
MAIN: Instead of throwing fatty ground beef on the grill this year, opt for chicken sandwiches! Chicken has way less fat than beef, is higher in protein and is just as delicious. Make patties out of ground chicken, or slice chicken breasts in half and plop them on the grill. Spice it up with BBQ sauce, some green chilis and some of that guacamole from earlier!
TOOLS: Broken glass and bare feet can quickly turn your party into an ER visit. If you’re hosting a party by a pool, body of water, or anywhere people might take their shoes off, I recommend having everyone pour their bottled drinks into plastic cups. (There are a ton of games you can play with plastic cups too!)
DRINKS: I always like to provide something for people to drink. Beer is great, but some craft brews contain over 300 calories and after a couple of drinks those calories and carbs really add up! A cheap bottle of wine can be less expensive than beer, has way less carbs and can be stretched! Buy a bottle of white or red wine and make a tasty sangria. The added fruit is good for you too!
Last, but certainly not least, is the entertainment! Everything from backyard games to dazzling fireworks!
GAMES: Everybody loves lawn games! Some of my favorite games include Corn Hole, Can Jam, and Bottle Bash! Equipment for these games can be purchased at a local Target or Dicks Sporting Goods. If you’re creative, you can also make your own equipment at home.
FIREWORKS: Safety is of number one importance. Always check your local firework laws and have a bucket of water handy for emergencies.
Sparklers and Pop-Its are fun, cheap and relatively safe fireworks. Sparklers are a great way to kill time during dusk when it’s not quite dark enough out to start lighting off fireworks.
